Buckeyes in talks with coach about Ohio State basketball head coaching job

The Ohio State basketball program will have a new coach at the end of the year. Apparently, they are in early talks with Dusty May about that

The Ohio State basketball team lost another road game on Thursday night. This time, it was to Minnesota in a game that never got close in the second half. It’s disappointing to see that happen after they were able to take down Purdue on Sunday. Still, it’s not entirely unexpected. The Buckeyes are now on a program-worst 17-game road losing streak.

That loss all but solidifies the fact that Jake Diebler won’t be getting the head coaching position after the season. Ross Bjork wants to hire someone from outside the program. I can’t blame him after what has transpired over the last few seasons. It looks like the new AD has already engaged in talks with a coach about his interest in the job.

Ohio State basketball in preliminary talks with Dusty May about head coaching vacancy

According to Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch, the Ohio State Buckeyes have reached out to Dusty May about the head coaching position. Talks are just exploratory at this point, especially since May is still in the middle of coaching his FAU team. He coached the Owls to a Final Four last season and won 35 games a year ago.

May is actually at the top of the list for me. He’s turned the Owls into a solid program in the six years he’s been the head coach. He’s still young at just 47 years old and has learned from both Bobby Knight and Mike Davis. I think he’d do a great job with Ohio State because he knows how to coach kids who aren’t highly recruited. If you get him some good recruits, watch out.

That’s something Chris Holtmann couldn’t seem to do in Columbus. He wasn’t able to actually coach the team well on the floor. He could bring in recruits, just not develop them into anything. May has proven he can do that. If the Buckeyes do end up offering the job to him, I’d be thrilled.

Of course, nothing is imminent right now. If IU fires Mike Woodson, that would also be an issue because May would jump at the chance to take that job instead. We’ll just have to wait and see how the rest of the season shakes out and what candidates will be available.
