The Ohio State basketball program has been working the transfer portal well so far. They have been able to keep both Felix Okpara and Bruce Thornton at home while also adding Meechie Johnson. Johnson returns to the Buckeyes after two years at South Carolina and should start next to Thornton next season.
Another famous player has reportedly entered the transfer portal. Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, is looking to transfer from USC. He only had one official campus visit before choosing USC and that was to Ohio State. Would he consider transferring to play for the Buckeyes next season as he tries to make the NBA?
Why the Ohio State basketball program makes sense for Bronny James
Bringing Bronny in would be a good move for the Buckeyes. They need guard help off the bench with the departure of Scotty Middleton. James is also a solid defender, something the Buckeyes need more of. James could also earn more playing time if he really makes an improvement in the offseason and could be the sixth man for Ohio State.
I doubt that James is going to find a major college basketball program that is going to promise him a starting job. As a freshman, he averaged just 4.8 points per game on 36.6% shooting. He’s not an offensive threat right now. Therefore, he can’t start. His defense is what brings him value to a team at the moment.
The Ohio State basketball program would be a good place for him to develop as a player without a ton of media attention too. While he’s in LA, he gets a lot of the spotlight while he’s near his dad. If he moves to Columbus, the national media will shift its focus a bit. Hopefully, that would allow James to feel less pressure while he tries to develop into an NBA player.
There has been a lot of speculation out there that James will for sure pick Ohio State. That is not the case. Nothing has been announced yet. This would be a good marriage for both the program and the player though.
