The Ohio State basketball season is virtually over. They have nothing left to play for in early February for the second year in a row. It’s a shame to say, but it’s true. They don’t have any chance of making the NCAA Tournament. Only a miracle run to a Big Ten Tournament Championship can make that happen at this point.
We may as well take a glimpse into next year’s roster and how the incoming recruiting class will fit. The Buckeyes have just two recruits signed for next year’s class, Juni Mobley and Colin White. Mobley is a point guard and White is a forward. They make up the 41st-best recruiting class in the country for 2024.
How Mobley and White fit into the Ohio State basketball team
Mobley is the higher-rated prospect of the two. He’s pretty small, standing at just 6 feet and 150 pounds. He’ll need to put on more weight once he gets to Columbus. What he doesn’t have in size he makes up for in skill. He can shoot it from outside and he has really tight handles. His speed helps him get around bigger defenders too.
Mobley would be a good guy to come off the bench to help spell Bruce Thornton next season at point guard. He’s someone that can score so Holtmann could actually afford to give Thornton some rest. I think he’d be a good fit for the Buckeyes next season and could eventually evolve into a starter, although his defense isn’t the best.
White is 6’6 and 180 pounds out of Ottawa, Ohio. He gives the Buckeyes some decent size at the wing position and he’s a good outside shooter, which the Buckeyes desperately need. His feet are slow on defense and I unfortunately don’t see him making that much of an impact with the Buckeyes unless that improves.
Both of these guys could end up playing for a different head coach next year. Holtmann has good odds of getting fired at the end of the season.
