The Ohio State football team has a lot of guys on preseason award watchlists this season. They are the second-ranked team in the country, so that makes sense. It almost seems like every position on the field for the Buckeyes has a representative on some watchlist. The Buckeyes are one of the best teams in the country, so that’s the way it should be.
One of the new Buckeyes who just transferred in during the offseason is on a preseason watchlist as well. Will Howard, the presumptive starting quarterback, was named to the Davey O’Brien watchlist. The Davey O’Brien Award is given to college football’s best quarterback. For Howard to be on the preseason watchlist is a good sign.
Ohio State football player Will Howard is on the Davey O’Brien preseason watchlist
Howard has taken most of the first-team reps in Fall camp. He took most of them during Spring practice too. All signs are pointing to him being the starter, which is why he’s on this list. History shows us that an Ohio State quarterback is going to put up some great numbers. Last year was the exception to the rule and is Ryan Day’s one outlier season.
Having Chip Kelly leading the offense and calling the plays will help the offense as a whole. It will also help Howard be put in the best possible spot to succeed. Kelly is going to use Howard’s legs as a weapon in the offense and make him a dual-threat guy. That’s something the Ohio State Buckeyes haven’t had in a while.
This is the most talent Howard’s played with in his collegiate career. If he is able to put up the numbers past Ohio State quarterbacks have, he’s a serious contender to win the Davey O’Brien Award at the end of the season. The Buckeyes also might be hoisting up a couple of trophies.
