Caleb Downs chose the Ohio State football program after transferring from Alabama. Before that, he had a lot of people interested in him.

As we all know, the Ohio State football program has put some serious work into the transfer portal this offseason. Adding two quarterbacks, an offensive lineman, a tight end, a running back, and a stud safety was fantastic work. It turns out that a lot of people wanted that same stud safety, Caleb Downs, once he did enter the portal.

Downs was the top person available in the transfer portal according to 247Sports. Ohio State was able to beat out Georgia for him to come to Columbus. Downs was a beast in his freshman season at Alabama, recording over 100 tackles as a starter. He was a Freshman All-American for a reason and he showed it every down he was out there.

As far as being an impact player on the field, Downs is going to fit right into a defense that was already loaded. The secondary very well could be the best in the country. With Denzel Burke, Jordan Hancock, and Lathan Ransom all returning, the addition of Downs makes this the best secondary Ohio State has had in years.

Caleb Downs got over 100 calls before choosing the Ohio State football program

Speaking to reporters for the first time since he joined the Ohio State football program, Downs mentioned that he was contacted over 100 times in seven or eight hours once he was in the portal. That’s a lot of different people who wanted his services for the 2024 season!

I wonder how many calls he got before he even decided to enter the transfer portal. Tampering in the portal has been something coaches have been complaining about ever since the portal became a thing. Other fanbases are accusing Ohio State of tampering with a number of the recruits they brought in. Of course, they don’t have any actual evidence to back up those claims.

I can’t wait to see Downs on the field. I think he’s going to be an absolute beast out there. The Spring game in April will be our first chance to see him in a Buckeye uniform.
