The Ohio State basketball team came into Sunday’s matchup with Michigan State having lost 17 straight road games. Chris Holtmann wasn’t able to get the job done on the road. It’s one of the biggest reasons why he ended up losing his job. The team didn’t show any poise when the games got close at the end.

Yet, the Buckeyes finally showed poised while they were playing the Spartans. They were down by as much as 12 in the second half and they were still able to come back and win in exciting fashion. The Buckeyes knocked off Michigan State 60-57 with a buzzer-beating three from Dale Bonner.

It was a great game by the Buckeyes down the stretch. They were able to make their free throws and make solid plays when they needed to. Devin Royal actually led the team in scoring coming off the bench to put in 14 points. His emergence makes this team a lot better, especially down low. He can score in the post and in the mid-range.

Jake Diebler is doing his best to show Ross Bjork that he deserves the head coaching job on a permanent basis. He’s beaten a top-three team in the country and has now snapped a program-worst road road losing streak. That’s pretty impressive for a guy who’s never been a head coach before. He still needs to stack up more wins if he wants it though.

The Buckeyes finally have some momentum as a program. We can finally stop talking about the fact that they can’t win on the road. The question now is how much these freshmen can develop at the end of the season. Ohio State has to do everything they can to keep Royal on the roster next season. He can be really good.

It’s good to see the Buckeyes get that monkey off their backs.
