The Ohio State football team made a lot of changes this offseason in pursuit of doing something they have failed to do over the past few years. They haven’t been able to beat Michigan, win a Big Ten title, or win a national title in any of the last three years. Before every season those are their stated goals.

Still, the Buckeyes think they can complete all of those goals this season with the additions they have made. Adding multiple key players from the transfer portal and changing up the coaching staff has given them new hope to be the best team in the country. Yet, there is still something mental that they have to get over.

The Ohio State football team needs to get over one big mental hurdle

In order for the Buckeyes to win everything they want this season, they have to get over the mental hurdle of beating Michigan. Michigan won’t be a good team this year. They lost too much on the offensive side of the ball and most of their coaching staff is gone. Ohio State has a shot to get back to being the dominant team in the rivalry.

That mental hurdle is not an easy feat to overcome. They have lost three straight to this team despite being the most talented team in each matchup, except perhaps in 2023. Talent doesn’t always win games. Grit and toughness do. Good coaching does. That’s something the Buckeyes are hoping they’ll have this season.

Ryan Day knows that he’s assembled a team that is all in on this season. 2025 could end up being a step back. 2024 could be Day’s last if things don’t go well. That’s why he brought in Chip Kelly and Will Howard. He’s hitching his future on the shoulders of both of those guys.

Hopefully, that’s the right move.
