The Ohio State football program was not active at all in the transfer portal this Spring. In fact, they haven’t added a single scholarship player from the portal. The only player they have added is a walk-on punter. That is, until this morning. The Buckeyes did add a scholarship player at a position where they are already extremely deep.

Ohio State added safety Keenan Nelson Jr. from South Carolina. Nelson Jr. becomes the first scholarship player that the Buckeyes add from the transfer portal this Spring. It might end up being the only one that they add with it being so late in the process. Nethertheless, the Buckeyes add some depth at the safety position.

Ohio State football program adds transfer safety

Nelson Jr. played two years for South Carolina, although he didn’t really do much. In two years, he only recorded 13 tackles. He redshirted in 2022 because he didn’t play more than four games. Nelson Jr. When he was recruited out of high school, he was a four-star recruit, so he has some talent. He’s a good player.

So why did the Buckeyes feel the need to add another player at the safety position? It’s not like that’s a position that is lacking depth for them. The reason is because you can always add more depth. Lathan Ransom will be leaving after this season, so they will be losing one starter already. Caleb Downs will stay for at least one more year as well.

I think this is a good move for Ohio State. Anytime you can add more talent, you should do it. Nelson Jr. likely won’t play much this year either, but he has a shot to get some next year. Ransom also hasn’t been the healthiest safety in the world, so the Buckeyes can always use a guy to back him up.
