The Ohio State football program made all kinds of moves in the transfer portal after the season. They added two quarterbacks, a running back, a safety, a tight end, and an offensive lineman. It was a pretty good haul. Now that the portal has been closed for a few weeks, the Buckeyes can take stock of their roster heading into the Spring.
There are still some holes that the Buckeyes have to address when the transfer portal window opens in the Spring. All of those additions are a good start for a team that is making a run at a national title, but more moves need to be made. One position group they need to upgrade further still is the offensive line.
The Ohio State football team still needs to work the transfer portal
Adding Seth McLaughlin helps the interior of the offensive line, but the tackles still need work. Ryan Day specifically mentioned the right side of the line on his radio show. Josh Fryar clearly isn’t the answer at tackle. It might be Luke Montgomery time, but the Buckeyes still could use some depth at the tackle position.
Who might be available depends on how some Spring practices work out around college football. That’s how the Ohio State football team landed Josh Simmons as the starting left tackle. I still don’t think he’s very good, but Day seems to like him. Either way, Ohio State needs to use the portal to increase their depth at the tackle spot.
The offensive line determines the ceiling of this team. If Ohio State can get some solid play up front, they have a real shot to not just win the Big Ten but a national title. Part of the reason they couldn’t beat Michigan was because they couldn’t get any push in the run game or hold up on the outside when they needed to pass. Don’t even get me started on the Cotton Bowl failures.
Ohio State used to be tough up front. That’s what they need to get back to.
