Today is the first day of Spring practice for the Ohio State football team. It’s the first time we get to see some of the new players who are with the program. We also get to see who is first on the depth chart at this point in the Spring. That’s especially important on the offensive line, which was the weakest unit on the field a season ago.
Ohio State got a new transfer lineman from Alabama in Seth McLaughlin. He was expected to either play center or guard next season to try to help a line that was much maligned a year ago. Personally, I want him to play guard. He had snapping issues at Bama last year. Now we get to see where he lined up on the first day of practice.
Ohio State football team reveals starting offensive line
As of the first day of Spring practice, the Buckeyes had Carson Hinzman as the first-team center. McLaughlin was the backup center. It seems that Day has somewhat forgiven Hinzman for what he said on his podcast before the Cotton Bowl. Personally, that’s the way I think it should be. McLaughlin would be an excellent guard.
We didn’t get to see where the rest of the offensive line was lined up. The battle at right tackle is the most intriguing positional battle on the team in my opinion. Is Josh Fryar going to return as the starter? Or will Luke Montgomery overtake him now that he has a year of muscle put on him? Fryar was the weakest part of the offensive line a year ago.
The offensive line battles will likely extend into the Fall so I wouldn’t expect any resolutions to come from Spring ball. We can get some clues as to where the coaching staff is leaning early on though. It’s going to be interesting to see who can take advantage of the reps they are given.
