One of the biggest issues with the Ohio State football team last season was their lack of explosiveness on offense. The only players who seemed to give them explosive plays were TreVeyon Henderson and Marvin Harrison Jr. The problem was that Ohio State didn’t have a quarterback who could get the ball to Harrison Jr. well enough for him to make those explosive plays late in the year.
Only one of those two players is back next year though. Henderson, when healthy, is a candidate to break open a big run at any time. How well the offensive line blocks is going to determine how many big runs he gets too. The addition of Quinshon Judkins also helps the explosiveness of the run game, no matter which running back starts.
A new QB will help the Ohio State football team be more explosive
Will Howard steps in for Kyle McCord as the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes. He’s someone who can run the ball as well. More importantly, he can create time for himself in the pocket if the offensive line breaks down like it did last year. He can actually throw the ball on the run to open receivers, unlike McCord.
Even though Harrison Jr. is headed off to the NFL, the Ohio State Buckeyes still have plenty of firepower on the outside. Emeka Egbuka is back and fully healthy. Carnell Tate will get more snaps to show off what he can do. Brandon Inniss was the best receiver in last year’s recruiting class and the Buckeyes have two more five-star receivers coming in as freshmen.
As long as the offensive line isn’t complete garbage, this team should have more explosive plays later in the year against good teams. The Buckeyes will have a stellar defense again this year. For once, it’s all about how good the offense can be. They took a step back last year in terms of yards per game and points per game which they are looking to correct.
Bill O’Brien better not screw this up.
