Ohio State football team sitting pretty after Week 1

The Ohio State football team had a great game in Week 1 against the Akron Zips. In fact, they should feel the best of any Big Ten team.

The Ohio State football team was able to beat down Akron 52-6 in Week 1 of the new college football season. While they didn’t have the best start to the game offensively, they fixed it in the second half. Defensively, the team was as good as advertised and even scored two touchdowns themselves. They outscored Akron 14-6 as a unit.

Ohio State was the second-ranked team to start the season. That hasn’t changed as they are still number two in the polls this week. Besides blowing out the Zips, they have other reasons to be happy with where they sit after the season opener. That comes from how poorly some of the other teams in the Big Ten played.

Why the Ohio State football team is sitting pretty heading into Week 2

The Buckeyes were one of the few Big Ten teams to look good. It was them, USC, and Penn State that looked like great Big Ten teams. A lot of the other big boys struggled in Week 1. Michigan struggled with Fresno State until the final drive of the game. Oregon only beat Idaho by ten points. Wisconsin struggled with Western Michigan.

If the Ohio State Buckeyes win the Big Ten, they get an automatic bid into the College Football Playoff. They were expected to win the Big Ten when the season started and nothing from Week 1 shows us that will change. The defense showed they are elite and they didn’t need much time to figure things out against Akron. The offense needed a few more reps but they are pretty darn good too.

Ohio State is ready to keep improving the offense, starting this week against Western Michigan. The offense is still going to be the question as we move into the Big Ten portion of the schedule. Are they going to be able to run the ball better? Or will the offensive line continue to struggle?

Still, the Buckeyes are in the best spot of any Big Ten team.
