Report: Ohio State football coach to take Boston College job

The Ohio State football program might lose their offensive coordinator before he has even stepped foot on the sidelines for them.

The Ohio State football program hired Bill O’Brien to be the offensive coordinator. Ryan Day just announced this hire a few weeks ago. The goal is for O’Brien to take over playcalling duties which will allow Day to spend his time elsewhere. O’Brien has called plays at both the college football and the NFL level. He most recently worked for the Patriots and Alabama.

Now it seems that O’Brien might be leaving before he even has coached a game for the Buckeyes. There is a report from the Boston Herald that O’Brien is going to take the Boston College head coaching job. O’Brien is a Boston native and has a kid who still lives in the area. He obviously has ties there from his time in New England as well.

Bill O’Brien might leave the Ohio State football team needing a new play-caller

The Buckeyes were hoping to have a more explosive offense next season with O’Brien calling plays. With TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins in the backfield, the Buckeyes are going to be better on the ground next year. Will Howard should be an upgrade at the quarterback position over Kyle McCord as well.

Yet, if O’Brien leaves, Day may end up being the play-caller yet again. Ohio State football fans have wanted him to cede those duties for years. He was supposed to pass them off to Brian Hartline last year but then changed his mind. It would be pretty late in the cycle to hire a new OC too, so Day may have no other choice.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but this looks like something that could happen. If it does, the Buckeyes will have to adjust and try to make the best of things. I was on the fence about the hire from the start, but I would have felt better if Day had someone on his staff who has called plays before.

If something does happen, we will certainly let you know.
