Chris Holtmann could be relieved of his duties as head coach of the Ohio State basketball team as soon as today.

The Ohio State basketball program has been floundering for the last two seasons under Chris Holtmann. They finished under .500 last season and haven’t won a road game in over a year. They just lost their 16th straight road game on Tuesday night after falling to a Wisconsin team that had lost four games in a row.

Holtmann has lost the support of the fans. I wanted him gone at the end of last season. The team doesn’t play well in clutch situations and they can’t come back if they get down double-digits. It looks like the administration might finally do something about it and start a new era of Ohio State basketball

The Ohio State basketball team could fire Chris Holtmanna as soon as today

There are reports flying around on social media that the Buckeyes could fire Holtmann as soon as later today. None of these reports are confirmed yet, so they amount to just rumors right now. If Gene Smith does fire Holtmann, it will be the first time he’s fired a football or basketball coach in the middle of the season.

There’s no word on who would take over if Holtmann is dismissed, but I have an idea that it would be Jake Diebler. He’s an assistant who filled in for Holtmann when he had COVID and couldn’t coach. I do think that most of the assistant coaches on the staff would be let go at the end of the season if Holtmann is fired too.

This would be a massive step forward for the Ohio State basketball program if this does happen. Holtmann’s time has worn out in Columbus and it’s clear he can’t develop the talent he brings in. His recruiting can’t save his job. Attendance has been declining over the past three seasons and TV viewership has as well.

If Smith does make this change today, I applaud him. We will let you know if anything official happens.
