Last season, Ryan Day didn’t make a decision on who was going to be the starting quarterback for the Ohio State football team until two weeks into the season. At that point, he gave the job to Kyle McCord for the rest of the season. It was a distraction for this team early in the year that they didn’t really need. It took Day a lot longer than he wanted to in order to make that decision.

This season, I know he wants to make a decision sooner. Last year was the first time that he didn’t name a starter early in Fall camp. That could end up being an anomaly because he could end up naming a starter for the Buckeyes soon. We are just a few practices into Fall camp, but he might be in a position to name a starter already.

The Ohio State football team could get a QB starter named soon

With how well Will Howard has been practicing in the last couple of days, Day could name him the starter as soon as next week. That would be welcome news for Ohio State football fans who have presumed him to be the starter since he transferred in. It was going to take a monumental effort from one of the other quarterbacks to usurp him.

So far, there has been no such effort. The Buckeyes are surrounding Howard with the best talent he’s had in his career. I’m sure that’s making it easier for Howard to practice so well so far. The receivers he’s throwing the ball to are the best he’s ever had. The same goes for the running backs he’s handing the ball off to. They can help bring out the best in him.

This is the most important starting position battle that the Buckeyes are going through right now. Once that gets settled, everything else will fall into place.
