Why doesn’t this ex-Ohio State football player have a job?

Ex-Ohio State football player Mike Vrabel was fired after this season. Yet, he’s one of the best coaches out there. Why is he unemployed?

The Ohio State football program has had plenty of great players do great things after they retire. A lot of them end up in the media either talking about the NFL or college football. Some of them move on to business ventures. Others just chill in retirement. After a career in the NFL, wouldn’t you want to relax with all of the money you made?

Some former Ohio State football players get into coaching. Kenny Guiton and J.T. Barrett are two more recent Buckeyes who are coaching right now. Guiton was even the interim offensive coordinator last year with Arkansas. But they aren’t the only Buckeyes who have been coaching. In fact, there is one Buckeye who doesn’t have a coaching job for some reason.

Former Ohio State football player still doesn’t have a coaching job

Perhaps the most successful former Buckeye to be a coach is Mike Vrabel. He won multiple Super Bowls with the Patriots as a player and even coached at Ohio State under Urban Meyer. He has been the coach of the Tennesee Titans for the past six seasons until the end of this season when he was let go for reasons that still remain unclear.

How does Vrabel not have a coaching job yet? There is only one NFL head coaching job left and it’s with the Washington Commanders. I thought Vrabel was going to have a job in four seconds after the Titans fired him. Heck, he just won Coach of the Year three seasons ago. He’s done more with less than almost any other coach in the league.

Could Vrabel possibly coach Ohio State if things don’t go well this season with Ryan Day? Day is definitely on the hot seat and if he doesn’t beat TTUN, he’s going to be let go. Would Vrabel come back to college and lead his alma mater? As much as I would love for him to do that, I don’t see that happening.

It seems more and more likely that Vrabel will take a year off and see what the market is next season. I don’t see him taking a coordinator position. I’ve been told that Vrabel will never come back to coaching at the college level, but maybe Ross Bjork would back up the money truck for him if Day is let go. We know he’s not afraid to spend money.

We’ll have to see what Vrabel decides to do.
