The Ohio State football program has officially named a starting quarterback for the 2024 season. It was a positional battle that needed to be figured out before the season started. Ryan Day did not want the battle to linger into the regular season like it did a year ago, so he named Will Howard as the starter for the year.

This is not a surprise. Howard transferred into the Ohio State football program for his final year of eligibility and he didn’t do it to sit on the bench. He wanted to go somewhere that he could start and play. Howard is the best choice right now. So why is Howard the best choice to lead the Buckeyes this season? He has a lot of skills that his offense needs.

The Ohio State football team will now be led by Will Howard

Howard gives something that the other quarterbacks don’t give the Buckeyes right now. He is a dual-threat quarterback who has experience. No other QB on the roster has taken a meaningful snap for the Buckeyes. Devin Brown had a shot to do that in the Cotton Bowl but got hurt in the first quarter and was eventually replaced.

It’s telling that Brown has now been beaten out for the starting quarterback job two years in a row. What is his future with the Ohio State Buckeyes? Will he stay next year when there are so many younger and more talented quarterbacks on the roster? That remains to be seen. Perhaps he will transfer somewhere that has less competition for the starting job.

Right now, the Buckeyes are only worried about this year. Howard has the best surrounding cast he’s ever had and should be able to thrive in this offense. The Buckeyes are a great team and the team has a good chance to win it all.
