It was a shock to a lot of people around the college football world when Chip Kelly decided to stop being a head coach and become an offensive coordinator for the Ohio State football team. Why would he go from being a Big Ten coach to an offensive coordinator? Why would he willingly take a demotion?
While it’s nice to work under someone he knows so well in Ryan Day, those are all valid questions. The unstable nature of modern college football certainly had to play a factor in that too. Speaking on Tuesday for the first time to the media, Kelly told reporters why he decided to make the move to coach for the Buckeyes.
Chip Kelly moved to the Ohio State football program because of changes in college football
Kelly said that he just wanted to coach football. He was tired of all of the other stuff. He no doubt meant the transfer portal, NIL, and the like. More and more coaches are saying that these days. Kelly himself said that other coaches have told him that they are right behind him in making some sort of move similar.
It was a blessing in disguise when Bill O’Brien decided to move on to Boston College. It allowed the Buckeyes to get Kelly, who I think is a much better offensive coach. He also has a long history of working with Ryan Day so that should help things along too. A lot of what Ohio State’s offense has been in past years are things Day learned from Kelly.
Ohio State football fans should be excited about Kelly being in Columbus. The run game should be vastly improved from what it was a year ago and that should open up the passing game. Adding both Kelly and Will Howard in the same offseason is something that should help the offense put up numbers like they were a couple of years ago.
I’m not sure how long Kelly is planning on sticking around in Columbus, but I’m glad he’s here at least for this year.
