The Ohio State basketball team has lost four guys to the transfer portal this offseason. It doesn’t seem likely that they will lose more guys, but nothing is definite until the portal closes. Meanwhile, they have only received one commitment from the portal. Former Buckeye Meechie Johnson decided to return to the program after two years at South Carolina.

Johnson will be replacing Roddy Gayle, who decided to enter the portal. He is the only starter that the Buckeyes lost to the portal. While Johnson is a better offensive player, the Buckeyes will miss Gayle’s size on defense. Gayle hasn’t decided where he is going to play yet next year but he is setting up a visit with a rival school.

According to John Rothstein of CBS, Gayle has been approached by a number of other schools since he’s been in the portal. He’s been contacted by Duke, Alabama, Syracuse, Gonzaga, and a bunch of other schools. Right now, he’s going to set up visits with two different schools. They are Georgia and Michigan.

This would be the second time in recent weeks that someone within Ohio State decided to move on to Michigan. Gayle spent two seasons with the Buckeyes but apparently doesn’t care about the rivalry. If he does ultimately decide to move on to Michigan, that would be the biggest indictment of Chris Holtmann yet.

Another coach wouldn’t have made it possible for an Ohio State basketball player to want to go to their hated rival. Andrew Dakich played a year with the Buckeyes after spending four years at Michigan, but it hasn’t happened the other way around. That would be disappointing to see.

As far as Gayle is concerned, he’s a good player. He’s not a great player though, so if he did go to Michigan, Ohio State wouldn’t get killed by him. He’s still not a consistent enough shooter to be a massive threat. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be an upgrade for TTUN though.
