Former Ohio State basketball player transfers to in-state rival

The Ohio State basketball program has had to navigate the transfer portal a lot this offseason. They have had four players leave since the end of the season. Meechie Johnson is the only guy they have brought in so far. That might change soon, but that’s still the case. None of Ohio State’s losses are critical, although losing Roddy Gayle was not ideal.

Zed Key was one of the guys who decided to leave in the portal. He played four years with the Buckeyes before deciding to go somewhere else for his final year of eligibility. It’s not a shock considering he was a backup to Felix Okpara this past season and he was slated to be again if he stayed. We do know where he will be playing his final year of basketball.

Key won’t be leaving the state of Ohio. He’ll be playing his final season of college basketball with an in-state rival. That school is the University of Dayton of the A10 conference. This makes a lot of sense for Key to do. He gets to stay close to his family and still gets to play for a program that has a history of success.

Key will now start for another college basketball program in his final year. I would expect him to average more than 6.6 points per game next season, which is what he did for the Buckeyes this past year. In order to be the most effective version of himself, Key might need to put on a bit more weight. It looked like he slimmed down too much this year.

We wish Key nothing but the best moving forward. He was a good Buckeye who never complained, even when his role was diminished. He’s a guy who is impossible to not root for.
