For the last few years, Ohio State football fans have been calling for Ryan Day to step away from play-calling. He was supposed to do that last season and give the duties to Brian Hartline. That ended up not happening and Day called plays all year long. That has changed this year now that Chip Kelly is on board.

Will Kelly on board, the Buckeyes finally have the right mix of coaches to take the burden off of Day. He can step back into more of a CEO type of role, which is needed in today’s college football landscape. The only thing he has to do is hire a running backs coach now that Tony Alford has left for Michigan. There will be more on that later.

The Ohio State football program has the right mix of coaches

With Kelly coordinating the offense and calling the plays and Jim Knowles doing the same on defense, the Buckeyes are in a great spot with the coaching staff. Special Teams duties are being shared among the coaching staff, which I think is a great way to do it. It keeps them from needing a full-time special teams coordinator.

The Ohio State football team finally has a coaching staff that has synergy. All of the coaches currently on staff like each other and have a track record of being good at their jobs, except Justin Frye. Bringing Kelly in, his former boss, might help that though. Now it’s up to them to develop the players into the kinds of players who can win a championship.

As far as the running backs coach is concerned, a new favorite might have emerged for the job. I’m still trying to confirm some things right now, so I won’t mention his name yet. That might come in a later article today or tomorrow. In all honesty, it doesn’t matter who the coach is. Ohio State has two excellent running backs.
