It’s the start of NFL free agency! It started at noon on Monday and a lot has already happened. Players are looking to put themselves in better situations than they were previously. That includes several former Ohio State football players, as a bunch of them have already signed new deals. Some have been with new teams and some have stayed where they’re at.
The Buckeyes pride themselves on being able to send a bunch of players into the NFL. Part of their recruiting tactic is to keep showing how many guys they have signing big deals. While no one has signed a massive deal yet, a couple of players have signed some pretty nice deals.
Several Ohio State football players sign new deals in free agency
Let’s start with one player who stayed with their team. Tyquan Lewis signed a two-year deal to stay with the Colts, the team that drafted him. This is now the fourth deal he’s signed with Indy and they clearly like him. When he’s healthy, he’s a valuable member of their defensive line rotation.
Jonah Jackson, who played with the Buckeyes for one year, has the biggest new deal of any former Ohio State football player. He signed a three-year deal worth $51 million with the Rams. He moves on from Detroit, which was the team that drafted him. That’s a lot of money to give to a guard, but he’s been solid so far in his career.
Jeff Okudah will be playing for his third team in five years after he signed a one-year deal worth $4.75 million with the Texans. His career has been plagued by injuries, but he’s still immensely talented. If he can stay healthy, he’s a weapon on the outside as a shutdown corner.
Lastly, punter Cameron Johnston signed a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has carved out a nice career for himself and is one of the best punters in the league. He’s an immediate upgrade for the Steelers at a position of need.
Those are all of the Buckeye signings as of now. There should be a few more. We will update you with more as they come.
