The Ohio State women’s basketball team won a Big Ten title
It was a great weekend for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams won. The men’s team snapped a 17-game road losing streak while the Ohio State women’s basketball team clinched at least a share of the Big Ten championship. In fact, the women are more than just a threat to the rest of the Big Ten.
The women are good enough to win a national title. They have just one loss in Big Ten play and three losses overall. The brand of basketball they play travels anywhere and it’s hard for opponents to prepare for. That’s especially true once the NCAA Tournament rolls around and teams don’t have as much time to scout future opponents.
Ohio State’s defense smothers opponents into coughing up a ton of turnovers. The full-court press is not something every team is equipped to deal with. In fact, most teams who aren’t in the Big Ten will struggle mightily with it. Besides making other teams turn it over a bunch, the Buckeyes do a good job of protecting the ball themselves.
South Carolina is the dominant team in the country right now. They are undefeated and the top-ranked squad, as they should be. It’s going to be tough for any team to take them down. Yet, this Ohio State women’s basketball team is good enough to do that in my eyes. They are well-rounded and have a bunch of players who can score.
While Ohio State fell just short of the Final Four a year ago, this year could be different. The Buckeyes will likely have a number-one seed and are well-coached. Kevin McGuff will have his squad ready to take on whoever is in front of them. On the flip side, his team is tough to scout on short notice.
Ohio State has two games left in the regular season. They take on TTUN on Wednesday at the Schott before ending the season at Iowa.
