Jake Diebler has a few more games to audition for the Ohio State basketball head coaching job. The Buckeyes are 2-1 so far under Diebler and just broke a 17-game road losing streak after beating Michigan State. Beating Purdue and finally winning on the road is a good start, but Diebler knows he needs to stack up more wins.
Winning the rest of these games is just one factor in Dibler getting the permanent head coaching position. Ross Bjork also has to decide whether or not Diebler can bring in recruits and have juice on the recruiting trail. One thing Chris Holtmann did do is bring in recruits to play for the Buckeyes. He just couldn’t develop them once they got to Columbus.
So that begs the question; can Diebler get recruits juiced about playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes? Is he a coach that recruits want to go play for? Ohio State is trying to get back to where they were under Thad Matta, but that’s going to take a while. Landing some big-time recruits would help with that.
Can Jake Diebler bring in big-time recruits into the Ohio State basketball program?
Bjork supporting NIL definitely would help Diebler if he got the full-time job. Recruits want as much NIL money as they can get. They also want to know that a coach can develop them into an NBA talent. That’s the biggest thing that Diebler needs to prove over the final few weeks of the season. Winning can help recruits see that.
I don’t think that Diebler is going to be able to keep the job once the season ends. I think Bjork wants someone from outside the program to change things. Does that mean that Diebler still can’t change his mind? Of course. A miracle run in the Big Ten Tournament can certainly get the new AD to change his mind about who gets the job.
I’m not sure recruits would be juiced about attending Ohio State strictly because of Diebler. That also be because we’ve seen such a small sample size. He could still change my mind.
