In the landscape of college sports, Ohio State is set up for success. The athletic department brings in a ton of money to support all of the varsity sports they have. The football program helps with that a lot. Bringing in the best players from across the country keeps the program successful. In today’s landscape, that means having a strong NIL fund.

The NCAA has tried to enforce some NIL rules lately. Despite not having a uniform rule to help with NIL across the entire country, they still are trying to put the genie back in the bottle. The states of Tennessee and Virginia did not like that and they filed a lawsuit. Now, they have been granted a temporary injunction that stops the NCAA from enforcing any NIL rules.

Ohio State sports affected by new NIL ruling

Essentially, schools can now pay as much as they want for a recruit and they can contact them directly now. Until now, they had to give NIL money through a collective. Now that the NCAA can’t punish anyone for not following that rule, expect schools to be on the phone with highly-ranked recruits and engage in bidding wars.

Ohio State has finally had some success getting NIL collectives to get more money from fans donating. The football program was able to get an NIL collective to raise $1 million in a week to help get recruits and keep current players on the roster. Now, collectives won’t even have to put in that kind of work. Ohio State can just give the recruits money directly.

It’s unclear how long this injunction will last. The Ohio State Buckeyes will be able to keep up with the fast-changing landscape of college sports. We are now one step closer to professionalism in college sports. I’m sure there will be a salary cap in college football and basketball soon.

Things are changing quickly. At least Ohio State is well-positioned to succeed.
