The Ohio State Buckeyes had two teams competing for national championships over the weekend. The Ohio State women’s hockey team was taking on Wisconsin in a rematch of last year’s title game. Wisconsin was able to win last year in heartbreaking fashion, so the Buckeyes were hoping for some revenge.
In addition to them, the Ohio State pistol team was looking for their fourth straight national championship. It’s not often that people think about Ohio State being a powerhouse when it comes to a sport like that, but they are. They were looking to live up to the expectations that they had set for themselves.
The Ohio State Buckeyes win two national championships over the weekend
That’s exactly what they were able to do. The pistol team brought home the national title. For the first time in school history, they have won four consecutive national championships. The program does have 43 individual national championships as well, which is an astonishingly large number of national titles.
The women’s hockey team was able to pull it out as well with a late goal in the third period. The Ohio State Buckeyes won the game 1-0 to secure a victory. Joy Dunne scored the lone goal in the game with just over seven minutes left to give the Buckeyes the national championship. It was nice to see them get redemption after falling just short a year ago.
New athletic director Ross Bjork is walking into a great spot with all of these Ohio State sports. A lot of them need to be allowed to just continue succeeding as they are. His biggest focus will be to fix the ones that aren’t up to expectations. He’s already trying to do that with basketball by hiring Jake Diebler. We’ll see what the football program brings this Fall too.
Congratulations to both of these teams!
