Another road game, another loss for the Ohio State basketball team on Tuesday night. It’s the 16th consecutive time that has been the case. The Buckeyes simply cannot win a road game to save their lives. The 16 straight road losses are now historically bad for them because they tie a program record for most consecutive road losses.
The Ohio State basketball program is now a laughingstock in the Big Ten. Only Michigan has a worse Big Ten record than the Buckeyes and Ohio State lost to TTUN. It’s an absolute disgrace to watch this team play. So what has to happen to make things better? What can change to bring this program back to what it used to be?
The Ohio State basketball program must make wholesale changes
In my opinion, the only way to fix this is to make wholesale changes. I’m talking from the bottom up. Chris Holtmann obviously needs to go, but he’s not the only one. Assistant coaches need to be let go as well. A lot of the current players need to be replaced too. There are only a couple of guys on this team that I think are solid contributors.
Bruce Thornton is a really solid player. I like Devin Royal‘s potential. Felix Okpara is a terror defending the rim. Those three guys are players the next coach needs to make a priority to keep. Everyone else is expendable based on what we’ve seen this season. No one else delivers consistency with their play or their effort.
This is not going to be an overnight fix. It’s probably going to take a couple of years for this team to get back to making the NCAA Tournament consistently. That should be the bare minimum for this program considering the resources they have at their disposal. Anything less should not be tolerated.
Less is what Ohio State basketball fans are getting right now. Fan attendance at the Schott has shown that. Things have to change. In just a couple of weeks, they will be.
